On this International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, I congratulate all who have made the Montreal Protocol such an outstanding example of international cooperation. And I urge Governments and all partners to apply the same spirit to the other great environment and development challenges of our times. Together, we can achieve the future we want."
Secretary-General's Message on the International Day
for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
16 September 2012
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16 September in commemoration of the date on which the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer was signed.
The Montreal Protocol is structured around several groups of ozone-depleting substances. Halocarbons, chlorofluorocarbons, hydrochloroflurocarbons, methyl bromide are some of the ozone depleting substances.
India became party to the Montreal Protocol in June 1992 and prepared the country programme in 1993 for phasing out the ozone depleting substances. Since 1995, the Government of India has been celebrating International Ozone Day at the national and state level.
The phaseout of controlled uses of ozone depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this and future generations, but have also contributed significantly to global efforts to address climate change; furthermore, it has protected human health and ecosystems by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiation from reaching the earth.
Anant Education Initiative organised a workshop for its scholars on "Food safety-We are what we eat" on July 5, 2013. The workshop, held on the Sector V premises of Anant, was conducted by international NGO Greenpeace, which works on environment-related issues.
The workshop focused on introduction of food safety, hazards associated with food safety, food poisoning and contamination, allergies and intolerance, genetic modification of food crops and its inherent hazards and what is right safe food.
The fulcrum of the presentation was GM or genetically modified food crops. Genetically modified crops (GMCs, GM crops, or biotech crops) are plants, the DNA of which has been modified using genetic engineering techniques, according to Wikipedia.
To set the tenor, a forceful case was made against the use of GM crops, underlining the health hazards associated with these. "The fact that the BT bacteria, which is injected into the mother seed to increase productivity is banned in the US, is itself an alarm bell we can't ignore. Sadly, there is a concerted effort to introduce GM crops in the Indian market, purely out of commercial considerations and totally ignoring probable health issues like genetic disorders in the next generation, fertility problems, skin and eye diseases and even cancer," stressed a Greenpeace resource person.
Anant students were told about the 'Living soil campaign' of Greenpeace, which stresses the need to use organic farming methods and puts pressure on the government to offer subsidies to farmers on organic fertilizers. GM crops sold in the open market must carry a label to alert consumers so that they are free to choose between GM and organic food crops. Anant scholars were encouraged to voice their opinions on the issue and most rejected GM crops on grounds of serious health hazards.
The event was wrapped up with a debate on the motion – 'GM route to food security'. While Prita, Sudipto and Gourab among the Anant scholars spoke in favour of the motion, striving to de-demonize the issue to the best of their ability, Sana and Monalisa took up the cudgels against the motion, making a forceful argument on why one should reject GM crops and resort to natural and organic means of cultivation, for food safety/better health and long-term sustainability.
# "The workshop was full of information on a primary necessity of life, food security. However, the sessions need to be more frequent and interactive. It would be nice if Anant arranges workshops with other organisations also." -- Afreen Perveen
# "I liked the concerted protest against harmful genetic modification of food crops the debate on the topic of food security. In future, I would like Anant to organise workshops on pollution that is disturbing our ecological balance and I would suggest increasing the debate time to make the session even livelier." – Abhik Kar
# "I really liked the workshop. They chose a very relevant and serious issue and explained all the pros and cons in a very simple manner that we could easily grasp. In future, I would like to attend a workshop on prevention of crime against women." – Indranil Ghosh
# "I enjoyed attending these workshops since Greenpeace is taking very meaningful initiatives and they are very friendly and helpful." – Madhumita Kar
# "I came to know about many new things from this workshop. I will try to remember all the important information that was shared with us and will try my best to make others I know aware of these things. In future, I would like to know more about other such pressing issues which affect our environment." – Pramita Saha
# "The event on the 5th July by Greenpeace and Anant was a very interactive and knowledgeable session. We came to know about the bill which, if passed by the government, will allow genetically modified varieties of 52 vegetables that can endanger lives and disturb the ecology, to be introduced in the Indian market. Thank you Anant, for providing us with this opportunity". – Prita Bali

The camp was anchored by Dr. Ranabir Mukherjee, the chairman of Eye Care Research Centre, who was assisted by his team of ophthalmologists and optometrists. In all, 91 Anant scholars attended the camp and were put through a complete ophthalmic work-up to screen for various conditions, including glaucoma and retina detachment. Free medicines were distributed and free spectacles handed out to those students who needed vision correction. More complex cases were registered for follow-up at the eye centre at a later date.
The event was graced by veteran social activist Mr. Nandan Bhattacharya and other dignitaries.
The focus of the meet was to create an opportunity for corporate houses and NGOs to interact at a shared forum and to discuss the possible impact of the Amendment in The Companies Bill, 2012 passed by the Lok Sabha, which on its enactment, will allow the country to have a modern legislation for growth and regulation of corporate India. The provision of CSR introduced in Clause 135 of the Bill mandates companies falling in a certain category to allocate at least 2% of their average profits over the previous three years to CSR initiatives.
The highlight of the inaugural session was the signing of an MoU on capacity building and sustainable livelihood for artisans of Cooch Behar. The MoU was signed by Shri Shantiram Mahato, Minister-in-Charge, Department of Self-Help Group and Self Employment, Govt of West Bengal, the Guest of Honour, and Mr. Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman, West Bengal State Council & Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Titagarh Wagons Ltd.
For Anant, the high point of the day was when the hon'ble minister Shri Mahato visited our stall on the sidelines of the meet. He was given a brief introduction of Anant's area of work and he evinced keen interest in our various projects with the students, stressing on the need to make them self-reliant.
The two technical sessions that followed, were graced by eminent panelists including Mr. Sudipta Das of Ernst & Young, Mr. Arnab Chakraborty of NGO Pradan, Ms. Tehnaz Dastoor, Consultant, Unicef, Mr. Vijay Vardhan of ITC, Mr. Indrajit Bose of IOC and Mrs. Camille Miranda Gonsalves of Lafarge India. The sessions were chaired by Mr. Umesh Chowdhary and Mr. Ranaveer Sinha, Chairman, Social Development & Community Affairs Sub-Committee and Managing Director of Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Co Ltd, respectively.
The last technical session on the scope of public-private partnership in CSR was attended by Shri Hridesh Mohan, IAS, Secretary, Department of Technical Education & Training, Govt of West Bengal, Shri S. Pal, Additional Director, Department of Social Welfare, Govt of West Bengal and a representative of the WB Pollution Control Board. The session was chaired by Mr. Aloke Mookherjea, Past Chairman, CII Eastern Region & Chairman, Education & Skill Development Sub-Committee, & Chairman, Flakt India Ltd.
The three-hour session held on the Anant office premises was attended by over 80 students and was a huge hit with all the participants. The Greenpeace team comprising Prateek, Priyanka and Ananya engaged the Anant scholars in a vibrant, interactive forum with quiz contests, educational and campaign videos and also an art competition in which, the participants were divided into groups and asked to express their thoughts on green consciousness on sketch cards. The top two groups were rewarded with hampers for their innovative art works.
Many Anant scholars were extremely forthcoming when asked to give their views on issues like global warming and renewable energy, with bright and sensitive responses. The session concluded with the Greenpeace gang seeking volunteers from among the participants and quite a few Anant scholars evinced interest to enroll as Greenpeace volunteers. The students were explained the scope of work they would be exposed to as volunteers and how they would benefit from the exposure.
The date for the next Greenpeace workshop will be announced on the website.
It has been Anant Education Initiative's constant endeavour to supplement and complement the scholarship with opportunities of enhanced learning. We believe that holistic education and learning alone can ensure you better options for employment and growth in future. This workshop was the first in a series to help our students enhance their self-awareness and hone their communication skills.
The Umeed counselors stressed the need for "a thorough understanding of your strengths and weaknesses" which in turn would come from better self awareness. The workshop was designed to take the students through a process of understanding themselves better so that they are better equipped to make key decisions in life.
The workshop also underlined the need for having decent communication skills to succeed in today's highly competitive world. Whether it is a viva exam or a job interview, what gets one ahead is good communication skill, the counselors explained to students through slide presentations and role-play. The workshop sought to enhance the Anant scholars' understanding about different styles of communication and improve their own personal communication styles too.
The students, though initially a touch hesitant to respond, warmed to the task as the workshop unfolded and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, while imbibing invaluable inputs on self-awareness and communication skills.
Keep an eye on the Anant website for details of our next workshop on life skills.
The central government officers were in Kolkata on a two-day CSR exposure tour, which included a field visit wherein they could interact both with the implementers and beneficiaries, besides the interaction with the CSR heads, to understand the impact of the CSR activities in the region.
During the session held at the CII Eastern Region office, 6, N S Road, Kolkata – 700001, we showed our Anant audio-visual and spoke about our activities with the students. We mooted the idea of sharing government infrastructure in the districts which are idling and requested the central government officers to suggest how we can align ourselves with government projects having similar objectives which would also help us avail government grants. They promised to revert with inputs, while appreciating Anant's efforts.
Handing over the scholarships to the students, Mr. Rasendu Putatunda, President, JU Alumni Association, said: "We are proud to be associated with the Anant project and with Mr. Ravindra Chamaria, the visionary Chairman of the Infinity Group whose brainchild it is. Our students who are receiving the Anant scholarship today, should make use of all the different skills training Anant imparts to become all-rounders."
A video presentation on Anant was made by Ms. Nupur Chamaria, President, AEI. Welcoming the new scholarship students to the extended Anant family, Ms. Chamaria said: "Our effort doesn't just end with handing over the scholarship. We are committed to offering our students a plethora of avenues like vocational training, computer education, hobby-based opportunities, grooming and personality development courses, etc, so that they stand a better chance in today's cut-throat job market." She also urged the students to "dream big and become more tech-savvy to use Facebook and the Internet as often as possible", since it's "now become a necessity" to keep pace with the world. The new scholarship students then took the Anant oath, prompted by Ms. Nupur Chamaria.
Earlier, Mr. Amitabha Roychoudhuri, Advisor, Students' Assistance & Awards Sub-Committee, spoke about the activities of the JU Alumni Association, which has "10 to 13 overseas branches and 7 chapters across India".
