The focus of the meet was to create an opportunity for corporate houses and NGOs to interact at a shared forum and to discuss the possible impact of the Amendment in The Companies Bill, 2012 passed by the Lok Sabha, which on its enactment, will allow the country to have a modern legislation for growth and regulation of corporate India. The provision of CSR introduced in Clause 135 of the Bill mandates companies falling in a certain category to allocate at least 2% of their average profits over the previous three years to CSR initiatives.
The highlight of the inaugural session was the signing of an MoU on capacity building and sustainable livelihood for artisans of Cooch Behar. The MoU was signed by Shri Shantiram Mahato, Minister-in-Charge, Department of Self-Help Group and Self Employment, Govt of West Bengal, the Guest of Honour, and Mr. Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman, West Bengal State Council & Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Titagarh Wagons Ltd.
For Anant, the high point of the day was when the hon'ble minister Shri Mahato visited our stall on the sidelines of the meet. He was given a brief introduction of Anant's area of work and he evinced keen interest in our various projects with the students, stressing on the need to make them self-reliant.
The two technical sessions that followed, were graced by eminent panelists including Mr. Sudipta Das of Ernst & Young, Mr. Arnab Chakraborty of NGO Pradan, Ms. Tehnaz Dastoor, Consultant, Unicef, Mr. Vijay Vardhan of ITC, Mr. Indrajit Bose of IOC and Mrs. Camille Miranda Gonsalves of Lafarge India. The sessions were chaired by Mr. Umesh Chowdhary and Mr. Ranaveer Sinha, Chairman, Social Development & Community Affairs Sub-Committee and Managing Director of Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Co Ltd, respectively.
The last technical session on the scope of public-private partnership in CSR was attended by Shri Hridesh Mohan, IAS, Secretary, Department of Technical Education & Training, Govt of West Bengal, Shri S. It has been Anant Education Initiative's constant endeavour to supplement and complement the scholarship with opportunities of enhanced learning. We believe that holistic education and learning alone can ensure you better options for employment and growth in future. This workshop was the first in a series to help our students enhance their self-awareness and hone their communication skills.
The Umeed counselors stressed the need for "a thorough understanding of your strengths and weaknesses" which in turn would come from better self awareness. The workshop was designed to take the students through a process of understanding themselves better so that they are better equipped to make key decisions in life.
The workshop also underlined the need for having decent communication skills to succeed in today's highly competitive world. Whether it is a viva exam or a job interview, what gets one ahead is good communication skill, the counselors explained to students through slide presentations and role-play. The workshop sought to enhance the Anant scholars' understanding about different styles of communication and improve their own personal communication styles too.
The students, though initially a touch hesitant to respond, warmed to the task as the workshop unfolded and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, while imbibing invaluable inputs on self-awareness and communication skills.
Keep an eye on the Anant website for details of our next workshop on life skills.
The central government officers were in Kolkata on a two-day CSR exposure tour, which included a field visit wherein they could interact both with the implementers and beneficiaries, besides the interaction with the CSR heads, to understand the impact of the CSR activities in the region.
During the session held at the CII Eastern Region office, 6, N S Road, Kolkata – 700001, we showed our Anant audio-visual and spoke about our activities with the students. We mooted the idea of sharing government infrastructure in the districts which are idling and requested the central government officers to suggest how we can align ourselves with government projects having similar objectives which would also help us avail government grants. They promised to revert with inputs, while appreciating Anant's efforts.
Handing over the scholarships to the students, Mr. Rasendu Putatunda, President, JU Alumni Association, said: "We are proud to be associated with the Anant project and with Mr. Ravindra Chamaria, the visionary Chairman of the Infinity Group whose brainchild it is. Our students who are receiving the Anant scholarship today, should make use of all the different skills training Anant imparts to become all-rounders."
A video presentation on Anant was made by Ms. Nupur Chamaria, President, AEI. Welcoming the new scholarship students to the extended Anant family, Ms. Chamaria said: "Our effort doesn't just end with handing over the scholarship. We are committed to offering our students a plethora of avenues like vocational training, computer education, hobby-based opportunities, grooming and personality development courses, etc, so that they stand a better chance in today's cut-throat job market." She also urged the students to "dream big and become more tech-savvy to use Facebook and the Internet as often as possible", since it's "now become a necessity" to keep pace with the world. The new scholarship students then took the Anant oath, prompted by Ms. Nupur Chamaria.
Earlier, Mr. Amitabha Roychoudhuri, Advisor, Students' Assistance & Awards Sub-Committee, spoke about the activities of the JU Alumni Association, which has "10 to 13 overseas branches and 7 chapters across India".
